Credit Card companies offer reward points trade for donations to Haiti

Posted by Amanda Lynn on February 1, 2010

American Express, Bank of America, Capital One, Chase and Citibank have all announced plans to allow cardholders to redeem reward points for cash donations to various relief organizations in Haiti. This is in addition to many banks waiving fees for donations made using a credit card to make donations.

American Express cardholders can make donations in increments of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 50,000, and 100,000 reward points. Each 1,000 reward points equals a $10 donation to a relief organization.

Bank of America cardholders can sign in to their account, select the credit card account rewards tab and select an organization to make a donation to. Cardholders can also make a donation by phone.

Capital One cardholders can use the online “No Hassle Giving Site” to make a donation to one of six different Haitian relief organizations. Capital One covers all transaction fees on charitable donations.

Chase Freedom, Sapphire and Ink cardholders can donate Ultimate Rewards points to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. Donations begin at $25 for 2,500 points and donations can increase in $25 increments with no limit up to their total point balance.

CitiBank cardholders can go online to ThankYou.com  to redeem reward points to the American Red Cross International Response Fund option, found under the charitable gifts tab to make a donation.
